I recently purchised a new enclosure for a 250 GB Samsung HDD (see my post ). It is an Icybox (IB-351UE) with USB and firewire combo. In the user manual it is said, that the enclosure can handle big drives ( 250 GB). Since the Samsung was first in an old Maxtor enclosure (dated from 2003), which cannot handle a 250 GB HDD, it was formatted from my iMac (Disk Utility) only with 128 GB. Now with the new enclosure, how can I use the whole 250 (may be it's only 230 or so) GB with my iMac?
How to format a drive for Mac and PC compatibility Posted by Ant on March 11th, 2012| 43 Comments If you have an external hard drive or USB flash drive that you’d like to use on both Macs and Windows PCs, choosing the right file system to format the drive can be confusing. To format an external storage device, connect it to one of the ports on your Mac. Turn the drive on, and make sure it appears in the Finder. If the drive is internal, it should already show up in.
What can I do? Thank you in advance. Sorry Andreas, In the left hand frame of disc Utility, where you select the relevant drive, make sure you select the upper of the two representations of the drive (ie the drive, not the volume). Now when in the partition frame, after selecting one partition, click on the 'options' button and make sure that 'Apple Partition Map' is selected, then go back to main 'partition' frame. In the lower section of disc utility what figure is shown next to 'total capacity'? (should be around 233 GB for a 250 GB drive) Try typing a figure just under this into the 'Size' box. My 250 GB external drive (with a 'Total Capacity' of 233.8 GB) has a single partition of 233.64 GB.
Now clcik on 'partition' If this doesn't fix it try selecting the '2 partitions' option, and then delete one of them (by simply selecting on of them in the visual display box below the volume scheme and hitting delete) Alternatively head to the 'erase' tab, rather than 'partition', select the appropriate format, and erase the drive. If still no luck post back. THis is getting very strange, Andreas. I'm beginning to wonder whether you have been sold a 160 Gig drive in error?
Does Disk Utility report the 'Total Capacity' of the Disk (not the volume) as 233 Gig or thereabouts, or as something much smaller. Did you go through the 'Erase Disk' process I suggested if the simple re-partitioning didn't work?
Again, you have to make sure that the disk, not just the volume, is selected in the left hand panel of Disk Utility. You are definitely selecting a 'MacOSX Extended' format for the disk, and using the Apple partition Map option?
I'll check with some others, but this all seems most unusual. Hi Karsten sorry to hear about your wife's health problem. I have just looked up the Samsung SP2514N on Samsung's website and it appears to have three different options for the 'master' jumper settings - see. Is there any possibility that the jumpers are set to one of the 'size limited' capacities? It is almost as if 48-bit LBA isn't enabled in the enclosure for some reason.
Is a thread with some worrying similarities. As I said in the other thread I don't like the Prolific PL3507 bridge, (and some earlier versions of it particularly can be quite problematic), but I doubt this is the problem here (I have a 160 GB drive in a case with a Prolific 3507 spinning happily next to me at full capacity present). With Macs enclosures with Oxford chipsets are certainly preferable. It would be nice to try the drive in an Oxford enclosure, but buying a new one until we get to the bottom of this is probably not a good idea. I'll dig a bit further. Apple Footer.
